Cuba has an excellent Health Care System but the US economic blockade has caused shortages in specific medicines, like antibiotics for example, supplies, like gloves, gauze and syringes, and medical equipment, like incubators.
To provide needed support two non-profit organizations (NSCUBA and Los Primos) and a volunteer organization (Not Just Tourists) developed the project Music & Medicines for Cuba. NSCUBA has a mandate to promote education and advocacy on issues concerning Cuba. Los Primos promotes live music, music education and social awareness in Nova Scotia and Cuba. Not Just Tourists focus is on changing the way we travel providing opportunities for tourists to become humanitarians.
We invited people to join us in this project and Nova Scotian responded making it possible to collect musical instruments and much needed medicines and medical supplies to send to Cuba. The good news is that the material aid, packed in a container, arrived in January in the port of Havana. Jeff Goodspeed tells us from Cuba that the container will be soon received by ICAP that will present it to the Ministry of Culture and Health. The Association Hermanos Sainz, a non-profit organization in Cuba is acting as liaison with the Ministry of Culture. The medical aid is planned to go to a hospital in Holguín and on a for-need basis to other destinations in Cuba.
