The Nova Scotia Cuba Association would like to condemn in the strongest terms the recent terrorist attack against the Cuban Embassy in Washington on September 24, 2023. A previous terrorist attack occurred in 2020 in which machine gun fire were directed at the embassy. Clearly the US government has failed in its obligation to provide security and protection for the Cuban diplomatic mission in the USA.

This attack follows in the wake of the successful visit by Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez to New York City for the United Nations General Assembly. There he was met by New Yorkers enthusiastically expressing their support for Cuba and in opposition to the economic embargo against Cuba by the USA. Despite the tremendous hardship Cuba has endured during the pandemic and the ongoing 60-year economic war that the US has waged against Cuba, millions around the world see Cuba as a beacon of Hope and resistance to an oppressive world order imposed on the Global South.

There is a long history of violence in various forms having been perpetrated against Cuba by the US and its agents. It is time for the US to end its repeated attempts to cause harm to the Cuban people. It is time to take Cuba off the list of States Sponsors of Terrorism, an absurd accusation. We also call on the Canadian government to condemn in the strongest terms this act of violence against a diplomatic mission. Finally, we call on the US government to investigate and bring to justice the authors of this terrorist attack.
